Marooning was a common pirate punishment for mutiny laid down in an article of pirate code of conduct. Pirate legend has it that following a rebellion among his men, the notorious Edward Teach or Blackbeard as he was a better known, marooned 15 of his men on Dead Man's Chest (a possible reference to the tiny Dead Chest Island that today forms apart of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean) with only a cutlass and a bottle of rum. Hence the reference in the first line of the well known pirate song ''15 men on a Dead Man's Chest, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.''
